ALLEPPEY KAYAKING

Kayaking is the use of a Kayak for moving across water. Kayaking and canoeing are also known as paddling. Kayaking is distinguished from canoeing by the sitting position of the paddler and the number of blades on the paddle. A kayak is defined by the International Canoe Federation (the world sanctioning body) as a boat where the paddler faces forward, legs in front, using a double-bladed paddle. Most kayaks have closed decks, although "sit-on-top" kayaks are growing in popularity, as are inflatable kayaks which come without decks but which have air chambers surrounding the boat.

The Kerala backwaters are a vast network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes and inlets, with navigable waterways spanning 900 kilometers! People of the region to this day rely on this web of waterways to get around and move goods.

On this experience, you will navigate these waterways on a kayak led by a local guide, into canals that are otherwise inaccessible by larger boats. You have an opportunity to observe life from close quarters discretely – watch as the day unfolds and people go about their daily lives; children heading to schools, villagers buying fish, and temples blaring devotional music.

This experience is designed to be recreational, so we will stop at a couple of places to rest, including a local teashop. Prior kayaking experience is not required – if you are reasonably fit and can swim then you can go on this experience!
